Things to Do in Our Apartment

We've been in our place for almost 10 years now, and there are some updates I'd like to make.

Here's a room by room list of what I'd like to do:

Foyer:
  1. I'd love to add a rug (possibilities include: this navy rug or this red/ivory rug from RugsDirect;  OR http://www.frontgate.com/phoenix-hand-hooked-wool-area-rugs/159421?listIndex=1, OR http://www.frontgate.com/aubrey-hook-wool-area-rug/indoor-decor-furnishings/155558?isCrossSell=true&strategy=24, OR http://www.frontgate.com/larkspur-total-performance-area-rug/407612?listIndex=0.  Or the Eleanor rug from grandinroad.com
  2. Polish marble floor.
  3. I've long wanted a chair or two in the foyer - but they need to be small.  Maybe the bird bistro chairs from grandinroad.com?  (I also like the little bird occasional table, the bird barrel table, the bird tray folding table and the twig coat rack.) Or perhaps a blue and white garden stool: from Overstock
  4. Painted 5/2014: walls-Benjamin Moore Misty Blue #820 matte; trim-Benjamin Moore super white PM1 semi-gloss; ceiling-Benjamin Moore super white PM1 ceiling paint)
Kitchen:
  1. Replace countertops and tabletop (or resurface, see: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-reviews/innovative-products-awards-2012?src=nl&mag=ghk&list=nl_gga_pro_non_011912_innovative-product-awards&kw=ist#slide-8).  Or at the very least, redo some of the cauking.  According to Good Housekeeping, I can "Remove the old caulk with a scraper (with any luck, it'll peel right off), then wash and dry surfaces. Mind your "45s": Snip the tube's tip at a 45-degree angle, then apply to seams at a 45-degree angle. GE Silicone II Kitchen and Bath caulk ($6, caulk yourhome.com) sets in three hours and has a five-year no-mold guarantee."

  2. Reface cabinets (but configuration and insides of cabinets is fine other than maybe adding a wine cabinet over the stove; maybe repaint as shown here).
  3. Update stove, microwave to stainless steel; can buy stainless peel-and-stick panel to put on dishwasher as temporary fix until it's time to replace.
  4. Repair chips in floor or replace; refresh grout or replace (see cleaning tips plus a review of the miracle grout pen).
  5. Use pretty baskets/boxes to maximize storage above cabinets.
  6. Don't use marble on countertops - it is prone to water spots, acid etching and other stains.
  7. Do consider a cork floor: it is warm, sound absorbent, and feels like walking on gel.
  8. Painted 5/2014: walls-Benjamin Moore Misty Blue #820 egg shell; trim-Benjamin Moore super white PM1 semi-gloss; ceiling-Benjamin Moore super white PM1 ceiling paint)
Living Room/Dining Room:
  1. Polish marble floor.
  2. Fix/replace overhead track lighting: LampsPlus.com
  3. Buy longer bookcase/console to replace current table w/printer. Maybe: Bourdonnais Double Bookcase or Morgan Double Wide Low Shelf or D'Aurey Console from Ballard Designs
  4. think about adding wall-mounted shelves on wall behind files
  5. lantern hook to hang blue glass vases: http://www.ballarddesigns.com/lantern-hook/304628
  6. replace sectional couch (consider leather)
  7. think about making wall over couch a gallery wall
  8. or buy a new large piece of art, perhaps from: 20x200.com, art.com, artfullywalls.com, artifactuprising.com, dwell.com, maxwangerprintshop.com, minted.com, permanentpresseditions.com, serenaandlily.com, thetappancollective.com, ugallery.com, zgallerie.com, can use cordless gallery lamp from Hammacher Schlemmer
  9. or maybe a big mirror like the grand palais mirror  or series of Lancaster mirrors from Ballard Designs; or the Andora mirror from Grandin Road.
  10. If need new floor lamp, think about cordless lamp from Hammacher Schlemmer
  11. New pillows.
  12. New living room coffee table 11/15.
  13. New dining room chairs 11/15.
  14. New dining room overhead light 11/15.
  15. Painted 5/2014: walls-Benjamin Moore Misty Blue #820 matte; trim-Benjamin Moore super white PM1 semi-gloss; ceiling-Benjamin Moore super white PM1 ceiling paint)
Hallway:
  1. Update photos.
  2. Maybe add new rug, at least 2.5' x 12'.  Possibilities include: http://www.rugs-direct.com/ShopDetail/Details/114522/Nourison/Nourison2000/2015/Navy; http://www.rugs-direct.com/ShopDetail/Details/137341/Safavieh/OldWorld/OW122/BlueLightGoldA; http://www.rugs-direct.com/ShopDetail/Details/156480/DynamicRugs/Brilliant/72284/Blue920

  1. Rethink art work.
  2. Buy new lampshades.
  3. Downsize desk; get rid of file cabinet.
  4. Replace Ikea bookcases with Cortona bookcases from Ballard Designs.
  5. Try to make bed less creaky (see tips from This Old House).
  6. Add a (faux) plant like: Ballard Designs' potted willow tree.
  7. Blue burlap bulletin board on either side of bed.
  8. rug on my side: black Flokati
  9. Buy new grey curtains in same shade as walls; hang on far side of windows to balance wall.
  10. Repainted 9/2016: Benjamin Moore’s Silver Half Dollar #2121-40 matte.
Master Bathroom:
  1. Fix or replace track lighting.
  2. Fix toilet paper roll
  3. repaint
Kids:

Bobby
  • wants a new chest of drawers in his closet.
  • Painted 7/2014: walls-Benjamin Moore tranquility #AF-490 flat; trim-Benjamin Moore super white PM1 semi-gloss; ceiling-Benjamin Moore super white PM1 ceiling paint)
Kenny:
Maybe they could use the acrylic stacking chairs from grandinroad.com.  And perhaps they need more attractive laundry baskets.

If need new desk lamps, think about cordless lamp from Hammacher Schlemmer

Boys' Bathroom:
  • Use these tips:
    • “The bathroom needs overhead as well as side lighting – usually 75 watts for overhead and 60 watts on either side” (Barbara Barry)
    • “The mirror in a bathroom needs overhead AND side lighting for a better lit face” (Richard Rabel)
    • "Typical sconce height for a bathroom is 66” above the finished floor to the center of the fixture” (Ginger Brewton)
    • “I recommend a height of 36” for a bathroom vanity instead of a standard 30. It’s more ergonomic and comfortable all around” (Jason Bell)
    • Get a streamlined vanity to make the room sleek and sophisticated
