7 Essential Money Questions

I bookmarked this New York Times article, 7 Essential Money Questions Sure to Start a Conversation, some time ago because as DH and I approach retirement, it seems like a reasonable idea to start exploring our financial goals. Here are the seven questions:

  1. What lessons about money did you learn from your parents?
  2. What does the word “money” conjure up for you?
  3. How many children would you like to have when you retire?
  4. How do you think your children feel about that (not just #3 but all financial decisions)?
  5. Tell me about your financial situation when you first met (for couples).
  6. What are the most important things in your life?
    1. How would you live your life differently if you were completely secure financially?
    2. What would you change if you knew you only had five to 10 years left to live?
    3. What would you regret if you knew you would die tomorrow?
  7. What does the prospect of retirement look like to you?
